Secrets of the Bush After Dark — Trail Camera Tales from Outside the Thorn Tree Fences

By day, the bush outside Thorn Tree Bush Camp hums with life — birds calling, squirrels squabbling, and the occasional kudu strolling past with that lekker attitude like he owns the place. But when the sun dips behind the thorny silhouettes and the last braai fire crackles to embers, the bush-veld slips into its most mysterious mood.
We’ve always known the night belongs to the wild… but, being curious South Africans, we couldn’t resist finding out exactly who’s lurking out there. So, we set up a few trail cameras just beyond our fences to spy on the secret nightlife around Thorn Tree. Quiet little cameras, properly camouflaged — no flashing lights, no fuss, just patiently waiting to see which local legends pop by under the cover of darkness.
And oh, what a jol we discovered!

The Bush Pig — The Grumpy Gourmet
If there’s one ou who doesn’t believe in table manners, it’s the bush pig. Stocky, shaggy, and with a face only his ma could love, he snuffles his way through the night like a grumpy gourmet, rooting for roots, bulbs, and the occasional lekker grub. Our camera caught them waddling past, snout down, looking like they had somewhere important to be — probably the next all-you-can-eat buffet he can find.
Fun Fact: Bush pigs are shy and mostly nocturnal, which is probably why they think they can sneak around in their 'pyjamas' and no one will notice. Little did they know… our cameras were watching.
The Hyena — The Laughing Opportunist
Next up, a shadowy shape padded into view — unmistakable sloped back, powerful jaws, and that trademark lekker swagger that says, "I go where I please." It was our spotted neighbor, the hyena. Contrary to popular belief, hyenas are sharp hunters and not just scavengers — though they certainly don’t turn down a free meal.
We half expected to hear a giggle through the footage — that eerie laugh drifting across the veld. Thankfully, the camera only captured her passing through… probably on the lookout for a midnight snack or an unsuspecting impala.

The Rhino — The Silent Tank
Imagine scrolling through grainy night footage and suddenly — boom — a great grey ghost appears. A rhino, calm as you like, lumbering past with the quiet confidence of a living tank. You don’t hear a rhino coming… but when one materializes on camera, you sit up straight.
It’s humbling to know these incredible creatures still roam free outside our fences, despite the challenges they face. We count ourselves lucky every time one of these gentle giants wanders by — trail cameras or not.
The Impala — The Nervous Nibbler
Impalas, shame, they’re everywhere — by day, by night, by sunrise, by moonlight. Graceful, skittish, and permanently convinced that something is lurking in the shadows (which, to be fair, often is). Our camera caught a small group ghosting through the trees, ears twitching, ready to bolt at the slightest sound. You can almost hear them whispering, "Quick snack… then RUN!"

The Elephant — The Quiet Garden Inspector
We’ve seen their signs often enough — broken branches, fresh dung piles, a mysteriously flattened shrub here and there. But it’s another thing entirely to see one stroll casually into frame, larger than life even in the camera’s monochrome glow.
This bull took his time, inspecting the greenery, perhaps eyeing out opportunities for later mischief. Their visits always remind us how wild and wonderfully connected we are to the greater Dinokeng bush beyond our fences.
The Porcupine — The Spiky Night Roamer
If you’ve never seen a porcupine on camera at 2am, bristling with quills and waddling like he owns the place, you’re missing out. These spiky wanderers are surprisingly bold, snuffling through the undergrowth like pint-sized tanks with attitude. We couldn’t help but chuckle watching him potter along — as if he knows those quills guarantee him the ultimate VIP pass through the bush.

The Wildebeest — The Midnight Drifter
Finally, a lone wildebeest appeared, sauntering past in the moonlight. They’re often called the clowns of the plains, but there was nothing silly about this chap’s quiet march under the stars. Just a lone blue wildebeest, moving through the night, following ancient trails beyond our fences.
