Caracul Off-Grid Camping – Wildlife, Solitude, and Raw Bushveld Adventure

Discover Caracul, the off-grid campsite at Thorn Tree Bush Camp. Unfenced, wild, and raw – where animals watch you and silence reigns.

Welcome to the Wild Side

Welcome to Caracul, Thorn Tree Bush Camp’s wildest little secret — a true off-grid escape perched beside a small farm dam that’s far more than it looks. By day, it’s a peaceful watering hole. By night? It’s the bushveld’s equivalent of a VIP lounge — and you’re the one in the tent, not the observer.

This unfenced, no-frills, no-power, no-ablution corner of paradise is strictly for fully self-sufficient campers... or those clever enough to hire a porta potty from us. No plug points, no noise, no ablution blocks – just you, your setup, and the soothing soundtrack of the African bush.

Rodney and Elzabé, never ones to recommend what they haven’t tried, have camped here themselves with their trusty UEV-14i. And yes, they too felt the curious stares from the tree line. You’re never truly alone at Caracul — but in the best way possible.

For the Seasoned, Not the Sloshed

Let’s be clear — Caracul is not for beginners, loudmouths, or party animals (the human kind). This is a site for seasoned campers, the kind who know their guy ropes from their kudu spoor and respect bushveld etiquette.

It’s not for the faint-hearted, and definitely not for rowdy bush parties with too much alcohol. The wildlife around here doesn’t tolerate bad behaviour. Loud music, yelling, or staggering about with a drink in hand?

You may find yourself removed — by nature herself. Trust us, the animals know when someone doesn’t belong… and they’re not shy about sending a message.

Visitors of the Four-Legged Kind

Over the seasons, our guests and trail cameras have captured an incredible line-up of wildlife visiting the dam. The beauty of it? The animals don’t know they’re on camera.

From impala prancing in the golden light to wildebeest rolling like oversized warthogs with attitude, the dam is never short on drama.

Solar Panels vs Hyena Engineering

One camper, bless her, left her solar panels neatly on the ground overnight — probably thinking they’d just soak up some moonlight.

Unfortunately, a curious hyena with a talent for “bushveld modifications” came along and decided the panels had potential… as chew toys.

By morning, one corner had been thoroughly “redesigned,” complete with tooth marks and slobber.

Lesson? If it’s not nailed down, the wildlife might just give it a performance upgrade.

The Dam Wall Siesta Squad

Then came the day a family of cheetahs decided the dam wall was the perfect spot for a lazy afternoon nap. Fully stretched out, tails twitching, right in the open — like they’d reserved premium sunbeds with a view.

Campers sipped their coffee with wide eyes and frozen muffins, too mesmerised to move. The cheetahs stayed for over an hour — yawning, licking paws, throwing side-eyes at the camera like runway models.

It was a masterclass in calm dominance. No one dared fetch the kettle from the car.

Smile, You’re Being Watched

At Caracul, it’s not the campers watching the wildlife — it’s often the other way around.

Guests frequently report that eerie feeling of being watched… only to later review their trail cam footage and spot curious eyes peeking from the bush.

One night, a wildebeest was caught on camera circling a camping chair like it was planning a braai — camper optional.

No Ablutions, No Problem (Mostly)

Just a reminder: Caracul is the real deal — no water, no power, and no ablutions. If you’re bringing your own kit, make sure it includes everything from water to waste solutions.

If not, we’ve got porta potties available for hire. They’re not glamorous, but they do the job — and best of all, they don’t stare back at you while you’re using them.

Leave No Trace – Only Footprints

Caracul is wild and untouched, and we’d like to keep it that way.

Whatever you bring in, you take out. There are no refuse bins at the site, but you’re welcome to dispose of waste responsibly at the main lodge’s refuse facilities on your way out.

Let’s keep the bushveld clean — for the animals, for each other, and for the next brave soul who decides to camp here.

A Dam View Worth Waking Up For

Early mornings at Caracul are pure magic. The mist rises gently off the water, birds call from the acacia trees, and if you’re lucky, elephants might approach the dam in the stillness of dawn.

It’s wild, raw, and beautiful. And it’s all yours — for a while, at least.

Caracul Is Calling

If you’re looking for an authentic, unplugged camping experience where the animals might be more interested in you than the other way around, Caracul is waiting.

At Caracul, our off-grid site is reserved exclusively for one group of seasoned campers at a time — those who truly respect the bush and its wild residents. Overcrowding, loud noise, or any abuse of nature is strictly not permitted. By accepting a booking, guests agree to Thorn Tree Bush Camp’s terms and conditions for off-grid camping. This is more than just a stay — it’s a privilege to experience nature in its raw, untamed form. Be present. Be mindful. And most of all — enjoy it!

Just don’t forget to wave at the trail cam on your way out. We’ll check who was watching whom.
